I'm married. I also have a son.
Johnson)
How many years have you been a DJ?
Thrasher)
I've been spinning 18 years. I started in 1985.
Johnson)
What was the first club you were a DJ at?
Thrasher)
Club Diego's in Pacific Beach. Now, it's called P.B. Bar and Grille/
Tremmors.
Johnson)
Where do you currently spin as a resident DJ?
Thrasher)
I'm a resident DJ at On Broadway. www.OnBroadwayEventCenter.com
Johnson)
What's your weapon of choice?
Thrasher)
I use two Pioneer CDJ-1000 CD players.
Johnson)
How did you get started?
Thrasher)
I was a doorman (bouncer) at Club Diego's. I had background in video.
Club
Diego's additionally hired me to edit the surf videos that they would
play
(on the tv monitors) throughout the club. The video players just happened
to
be in the DJ booth. One night, one of the DJ's got fired. I was on the
floor
(working as a doorman). They put me in the DJ booth and I never left.
Johnson)
Name your first three club hits.
Thrasher)
You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive.
Venus by Banannarama.
Sexappeal by Georgio.
Johnson)
Name your current three club hits
Thrasher)
Sunshine by Tomaz vs. Filterheadz.
Get Down by Mike Monday.
On & On (white lable).
Johnson)
What was the best event you've ever DJed?
Thrasher)
New Years Eve at On Broadway. December 31st, 2001. Good vibe!
Johnson)
What was the worst event you've ever DJed?
Thrasher)
I was booked to DJ a corporate party for 1200- 1500 people. Half were
Brazillian, half were Latin American. The party planner didn't tell me
to
bring Latin music, just American top 40. The crowd hated me. Not only
did I
get booed, they also threw napkins and fruit at me.
Johnson)
Who were your favorite DJ's when you started?
Thrasher)
DJ Dan Whitney at Club Diego's.
DJ J.R. (John Ruta) at the Elephant Bar.
DJ Voodoo at Confetti.
Johnson)
Who are your favorite DJ's now?
Thrasher)
Donald Glaude from One World Entertainment and Dave Aude. He's represented
by either At Large or Moonshine.
Johnson)
What styles of music did you spin when you started?
Thrasher)
I spun top 40 on the weekends. Hip hop, r & b, disco, new wave. Back
then,
there was even a little bit of house in the mix too. On the weekdays it
would vary. I'd even spin the underground music of that time. Like
alternative, gothic, and industrial.
Johnson)
What styles of music do you spin now?
Thrasher)
I spin progressive house, hip hop, and top 40.
Johnson)
Do you DJ any radio mix shows?
Thrasher)
I'm on Channel 933 (93.3 FM) every day at noon for Club 933. Friday and
Saturday, I spin Club 933 from 9 p.m. till midnight. I spin progressive
house on Thump Radio every Friday night from midnight to 1 a.m. I also
DJ
and produce Digital Groove, every Saturday night, from midnight till 3
a.m.
It features the best national and
international DJ talent.
Johnson)
What do you like the best about being a club DJ?
Thrasher)
The hours. I get to spend time with my family and have another career.
Johnson)
Any last comments?
Thrasher)
Thanks to all who have supported me in the club DJ business. I didn't
think
I'd be doing it this long.
