DELIO BACALSKI
Guitarist with Sister Margaret Mary Jones

Interview by Severo Polo

When I met the illustrious Delio… It was a part of town that I haven’t been to in quite some time. As I entered the room, the sounds of a grinding guitar rift echoed with depression of one who has been walking with the dead. He was in the middle of his séance to awaken the Kings Spirit… ELVIS! He told me to quickly get a picture of what is to come! He put down his Gold Top Les Paul and picked up the sacred electric candles… I pressed the release button for what I saw next was the King himself floating out the side of Delio’s face. (You can see the picture at www.NLY10.com)…. I freaked out, ran outside and had to settle down next door at the Local 12 with 2 sake bombs. (the Local 12 is located at 2812 Kettner Blvd, San Diego (619) 574-6833)

Anyhow here is the interview during our drinks:

The first time I saw you play was right here when it was called Velvet. You weren’t even 18 yet and you had to wait outside right before your set. All I remember was that your band blew me away with sounds that I never heard in San Diego before…what musical journey have you been on since those days of CUPID almost 10 years ago?

--I've experimented with a few styles. Rockabilly to Shoegazer to Acid Jazz and a healthy dose of British Rock. Through it all, I've realized that the primal, sleazy element that can make contemporary music a religious experience is the spirit of rock n roll. This is the spirit I wish to harness.

Your guitar playing is very unorthodox and a style of which yet to be discovered… What were your early inspirations ?

--Birds, crowd noise. The Jesus and Mary Chain taught me a lot, as did the Beatles, the Stones, and the Stone Roses. The best influences have never involved guitars, though.

You’re one of the most influential Guitarist in the underground scene here in San Diego… Why do you stay so hidden in the shadows?

--You know, I do like to keep a low profile, and it's because I can't keep up with all the falseness that comes with any scene. I find that I'm not successful with my work if I don't give myself enough space to know myself and experience our world as it really is.

What is your latest project? Who are involved and when is your next gig?
I know several hunnies from Del Mar who are dying to hear you play…

--I've been blessed to be in Sister Margaret Mary Jones. The members are Michael Hernandez (Lualta), Steven Andrew Miller (Kill Holiday), Mike Ortiz (Lualta), and Barry Kellman (American Luxury, Kill Holiday). Your first encounter with Sister Margaret Mary Jones will be May 29th at the Ken Club with the Dragons and Mike Flynn. But the Sister might pay North County an early visit.

Will you be doing your séance at your next show?

--The spirit of Rock n Roll will permeate the air and tempt the souls of all. Yes.
